This vehicle has a Toyota "U" two cylinder horizontally opposed engine
with a displacement of 700 cc's(Thats right - 2 Cylinder!).
The only thing not original on this engine is the change to a dual carburetor
manifold from the Toyota Sports 800. This provides more HP and is a welcome
addition to the original quoted 28hp. To facilitate this addition, the
Battery was moved to the truck compartment which is common for these vehicles
when they are used in vintage racing.
This particular Publica was repainted more than 20 years ago in Japan. Aside
from that, we refurbished the interior when it was imported to the USA.
New seat covers, carpeting and headliner were installed. We did not recover The dash pad as we were concerned about matching it correctly. There are several
Small cracks in the vinyl but we felt leaving it original was more important.
This Publica is the UP-10D Deluxe version which includes the following options:
Chrome moldings around the windows, tail lights, side markers and lower moldings.
This vehicle also includes the factory AM radio and the dealer installed Dash Clock.
The clock was rebuilt using a modern quartz movement but the face and hands appear
as original. There is a modern stereo installed in the glove box with speakers in the rear deck.
The Publica has good tires and the 4 speed column shift works good.
I have had this vehicle on the freeway up to 60mph and it handles well but is a
little scary at high speed due to its lightweight (1250 lbs). It is great on the street and
attracts attention where ever you go.
It has approximately 33,000 original miles (60,000 kms).
It is a consistent winner at all of the cars shows I attend.

This Publica is one of FOUR know in the USA and the
ONLY running example. There are two that I found in Junk Yards (and probably gone
by now) and the other one was imported by me at the same time as this one! It
has since been sold as a parts vehicle for a Sport 800 restoration.
